What is DHA?

Important long chain omega-3 fatty acids.
DHA is more than just part of the name of DuetDHAec. DHA is short for docosahexaenoic acid and is one of the important long chain omega-3 fatty acids.

Building blocks and system regulators within the body.
EPA or eicosapentanoeic acid is another important long chain omega-3 fatty acid. DuetDHAec may only contain DHA in the name, but when you take DuetDHAec you will be getting the benefits of both DHA and EPA. These important omega-3 fatty acids serve as building blocks within the body.

Important for development.
Research has shown that they’re very important for the development and maintenance of the brain, eyes, heart, cells and nervous system – even for mental health - from the time we develop in the womb, throughout childhood and adulthood, and into our senior years (Hornstra 2000; Uauy 2001; Kris-Etherton 2002; Hibbeln 2006).

Most common source: fish and fish oils.
Typically, our bodies get DHA and EPA from the food we eat. The most common dietary source of these omega-3 long chain fatty acids are fish and fish oils.

Fish consumption dangers.
But before you start adding more fish to your diet, you might want to know that there may be high levels of mercury in certain types of fish, and the US government has advised of the potential dangers of fish consumption to pregnant women and their babies (EPA Consumer Advisory 2004; FDA Consumer 1994).

Other kinds of omega-3 fatty acids.
There are plant-based sources of omega-3 fatty acids such as certain vegetable oils and nuts. These sources produce primarily the short chain alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an omega-3 that must go through a long and difficult conversion process in the body to make omega-3 long chain fatty acids (like DHA and EPA). Therefore, it may be difficult to take in enough of these fatty acids to get the benefits you need (Kris-Etherton 2002).

The right nutritional supplement might be the right answer.
Even a healthy diet may not provide all the DHA and other essential fatty acids needed, especially during pregnancy (Benisek 2000). Ask your doctor if DuetDHAec is the answer for you and your baby.
